Show client and stakeholder engagement
Solutions architecture is not a back-office engineering role. Hiring managers at AWS, Google Cloud, Deloitte, and Accenture are specifically looking for architects who can present to C-suite executives, win competitive evaluations, and translate technical trade-offs into language that business leaders understand. If you’ve delivered architecture presentations that closed deals, led workshops that aligned engineering and product teams, or served as the technical point of contact for enterprise accounts, those accomplishments deserve prominent placement. Demonstrate cost optimization as a core competency
Cloud cost optimization is one of the highest-leverage skills a solutions architect can show. Saving a client $3.2M through rightsizing and reserved instances is instantly understood by any hiring manager. It implies you understand workload patterns, pricing models, and the trade-offs between performance and cost at scale. If you’ve reduced infrastructure spend, designed architectures that scale without linear cost growth, or built cost governance frameworks, lead with the dollar amounts. They’re more compelling than any description of services you’ve configured.
Show technical depth across cloud platforms
Junior cloud engineers focus on deploying services. Senior solutions architects focus on designing systems that span multiple services, regions, and sometimes providers — while navigating the trade-offs that come with each decision. Showing that you designed a multi-region failover strategy, migrated a monolith to microservices, or built reusable infrastructure modules that scaled across engagements signals to a hiring manager that you operate at the systems level, not the service level. “Created reusable Terraform modules adopted across 6 client engagements, reducing provisioning from 2 weeks to 4 hours” isn’t just an infrastructure accomplishment; it’s proof you can build abstractions that scale across teams and clients.
