The resume grading rubric: what separates an A from a C

A resume grader gives you a structured evaluation of your resume quality — not just a number, but a breakdown of what is working and what is dragging your grade down. Most resumes grade in the C range (50 to 65 out of 100). That is not because the people behind them lack experience — it is because resumes are usually written once, recycled for years, and never evaluated against a clear rubric. Our resume grader scores your document across four weighted categories and tells you exactly where to focus your effort.

How the resume grading categories work

Each category in our resume grader evaluates a different dimension of resume quality. Your overall grade is a composite of all four, but improving any single category lifts the whole score. Here is what each category measures:

What each resume grade range means

Understanding your grade range helps you set realistic expectations and prioritize improvements:

  1. 80-100 (A grade): Your resume is in the top tier. Bullets are quantified, formatting is clean, and ATS systems parse it without issues. You are competitive for any role that matches your experience level.
  2. 65-79 (B grade): Above average. You have solid content but some categories are pulling your grade down — maybe a few unquantified bullets or minor formatting inconsistencies. Targeted edits can push you into A territory.
  3. 50-64 (C grade): Average. This is where most resumes land. The content exists but lacks polish — vague bullets, inconsistent structure, or ATS issues. This grade is fixable with focused effort.
  4. Below 50 (D/F grade): Below average. Multiple categories have significant issues. The resume likely needs structural changes, not just line edits.

Common mistakes that drop your resume grade

Certain mistakes have an outsized effect on your resume grade because they affect multiple categories at once. Fixing these first gives you the biggest improvement per effort spent:

How to go from a C resume grade to an A

The path from a C to an A is straightforward: fix your weakest category first, then iterate. If Impact is your lowest score, go through every bullet and add a number. If Clarity is dragging you down, cut every bullet to one line and eliminate filler. If ATS is the problem, switch to a single-column layout with standard headers. Each round of targeted edits typically improves your overall grade by 10 to 15 points.

Questions

Your resume is graded on a 0 to 100 scale across four categories: Impact, Brevity and Clarity, Formatting and Structure, and ATS Readability. Each category receives its own score and specific feedback. The overall grade is a weighted composite of all four.

A grade of 80 or above is excellent — your resume is competitive for most roles. Between 65 and 79 is solid but has room for improvement. Between 50 and 64 needs targeted work. Below 50 indicates significant issues across multiple categories.

Impact measures whether your bullets prove measurable results. Brevity and Clarity checks if a recruiter can scan your resume quickly. Formatting and Structure evaluates consistency and organization. ATS Readability checks whether applicant tracking systems can parse your document correctly.

Yes. Add a job posting URL and the grader will include a job fit score on top of the four standard categories. This shows how well your resume matches the specific requirements of that role.

Focus on your weakest category first. If Impact is low, add metrics to every bullet. If Clarity is low, cut filler and shorten bullets to one line. If Formatting is low, standardize your layout. If ATS is low, remove tables, columns, and graphics. Each point of improvement in your weakest area has the biggest effect on your overall grade.
