Every data engineer job posting lists SQL, but what separates a junior candidate from a mid-level one is the complexity of what you’ve done with it. “Proficient in SQL” on your skills line means nothing. A bullet that says “wrote a recursive CTE to flatten a nested JSON hierarchy across 15M event records, reducing query time from 8 minutes to 12 seconds” shows real depth. On your resume, at least one or two bullets should demonstrate SQL that goes beyond basic SELECT statements — window functions, CTEs, query optimization, or complex joins across large datasets.
Hiring managers for junior data engineering roles aren’t expecting you to have built a petabyte-scale Spark cluster. They want to know that you understand what makes a data pipeline reliable: error handling, data validation, idempotent loads, schema evolution, and monitoring. If you built a simple pipeline but added data quality checks with Great Expectations or dbt tests, that’s a stronger signal than a complex pipeline that breaks silently. Mention what happens when your pipeline fails — not just what it does when everything works.
Data engineering has a unique advantage for junior candidates: the tools are mostly open source and the datasets are publicly available. A personal project that ingests a public API, transforms the data with dbt or Airflow, and loads it into a warehouse is a legitimate portfolio piece. Contributing to dbt packages, Airflow plugins, or data quality tools shows initiative and technical ability. These projects belong prominently on your resume, not buried at the bottom.
Spark shows up on most data engineering job postings, and it’s tempting to list it because you ran a few PySpark jobs in a class. But if an interviewer asks you to explain shuffle operations or partition strategies and you can’t, you’ve hurt yourself. It’s fine to list “Spark (basics)” or mention it in context (“processed 2M records using PySpark”) — just don’t imply expertise you don’t have. Interviewers for junior roles expect you to be honest about what you know and eager to learn the rest.
Include the ones you actually have. Leave out the ones you’d struggle to discuss in an interview.
For data engineering roles, especially at the junior level, the Classic template works best.
