What the IT support interview looks like
IT support interviews focus on troubleshooting methodology, technical fundamentals, and customer service skills. Most processes take 1–3 weeks across 2–4 rounds. Here’s what each stage looks like and what they’re testing.

Role-specific questions you should expect
IT support interviews prioritize practical troubleshooting over theoretical knowledge. You’ll be given real-world scenarios and expected to walk through your diagnostic process step by step.
ipconfig on Windows, ifconfig on Mac) — if it shows 169.254.x.x, DHCP isn’t working. Try a static IP to test. Check the wireless adapter driver — a recent update may have broken it. Try connecting to a mobile hotspot to test the adapter itself. If all else fails, check if the device’s MAC address is blocked on the access point.nslookup or dig to test resolution. Try flushing the local DNS cache (ipconfig /flushdns on Windows). Check if the DNS server configured on the device is correct and reachable. Customer service skills are as important as technical skills in IT support. Behavioral questions test how you handle frustrated users, prioritize competing requests, and communicate technical concepts to non-technical people. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for every answer.
How to prepare (a 2-week plan)
Week 1: Build your technical foundation
- Days 1–2: Review networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, subnets, NAT, common ports (80, 443, 22, 3389). Understand the OSI model at a practical level — focus on how it helps you isolate problems.
- Days 3–4: Review operating systems: Windows troubleshooting tools (Event Viewer, Task Manager, msconfig, Device Manager, command prompt utilities), macOS basics (Disk Utility, Console, Activity Monitor), and Linux command line fundamentals if relevant to the role.
- Days 5–6: Practice scenario-based troubleshooting out loud. Have a friend describe a problem, and walk through your diagnostic process step by step. Focus on asking clarifying questions before jumping to solutions.
- Day 7: Rest. Review your notes casually but don’t cram.
Week 2: Simulate and refine
- Days 8–9: Prepare 4–5 STAR stories covering: a frustrated user interaction, a difficult troubleshooting case, a time you improved a process, and a time you had to prioritize competing requests.
- Days 10–11: Review your certifications and study materials (CompTIA A+, Network+, or ITIL if relevant). Refresh any areas that feel rusty. Practice explaining concepts without jargon.
- Days 12–13: Research the specific company. Understand their environment: are they a Windows shop? Do they use Macs? What ticketing system do they use? What scale of support (50 users or 5,000)? Prepare 3–4 questions about their support structure and tools.
- Day 14: Light review. Skim your notes, run through your STAR stories once, and get a good night’s sleep.

- Troubleshooting methodology: Do you follow a systematic diagnostic process, or do you guess randomly? Can you isolate the problem layer by layer? This is the single most important technical skill they evaluate.
- Customer service and communication: Can you explain technical issues in plain language? Are you patient with frustrated users? Do you follow up after resolving an issue? IT support is a service role — technical skills without communication skills are insufficient.
- Technical breadth: Do you have a solid working knowledge of networking, operating systems, hardware, and common enterprise tools (Active Directory, Office 365, ticketing systems)? You don’t need to be an expert in everything, but you need functional knowledge across the board.
- Prioritization and time management: Can you triage effectively when multiple things break at once? Do you understand the difference between urgent and important? Can you manage a ticket queue without losing track of open issues?
- Learning and growth mindset: Technology changes constantly. Do you stay current? Do you document what you learn? Do you look for root causes rather than just applying band-aids?
Mistakes that sink IT support candidates
- Jumping to solutions without asking clarifying questions. The first thing you should do in any troubleshooting scenario is ask: “When did this start? Did anything change recently? Does it affect just you or others too?” Guessing immediately signals poor methodology.
- Being too technical in your explanations. If the interviewer role-plays as a frustrated user and you respond with jargon about DNS resolution and DHCP leases, you’ve failed the communication test. Adapt your language to your audience.
- Forgetting the customer service dimension. IT support is not just about fixing things — it’s about making people feel helped. Always mention how you communicated with the user, set expectations, and followed up.
- Not knowing basic networking. You don’t need to configure a Cisco router, but you must understand IP addresses, DNS, DHCP, and basic network topology. These come up in almost every IT support interview.
- Having no examples of process improvement. If all your stories are reactive troubleshooting, you seem like someone who only fights fires. Have at least one example of preventing recurring issues or improving the support workflow.
How your resume sets up your interview

- What was the support environment (number of users, tools used, ticket volume)?
- What was the hardest troubleshooting case you handled in that role?
- What metrics did you improve (resolution time, first-call resolution rate, user satisfaction)?
- What process improvements did you make that had lasting impact?
