What the junior data analyst interview looks like

    2–3 hours across 2–3 sessions. Typically includes a SQL/technical round, a business case or analytical thinking round, and a behavioral round. You may be asked to present findings from the take-home.
  • Hiring manager conversation

Technical questions you should expect

Mention that you’d handle NULLs in the revenue column (use COALESCE(revenue, 0)) and clarify whether “revenue” means gross or net. If asked to include customers with zero orders, switch the JOIN to a LEFT JOIN.
You notice a sudden 20% drop in daily signups. How would you investigate?

First, verify the data: is the drop real or a tracking/logging issue? Check if the analytics pipeline ran correctly. If it’s real, segment the drop: which channels (organic, paid, referral), geographies, or device types are affected? Is it a one-day anomaly or a trend? Check for external factors: was there a site outage, a broken signup flow, a payment processor issue, or a marketing campaign that ended? Check for code deployments that may have broken something. The key is showing a systematic approach: verify, segment, correlate with known events, then investigate the most likely cause first.
What’s the difference between an inner join, a left join, and a full outer join?
Fundamental SQL question. Use a concrete example to make your explanation clear.
An INNER JOIN returns only rows that have matching values in both tables. A LEFT JOIN returns all rows from the left table, plus matching rows from the right table (NULLs where there’s no match). A FULL OUTER JOIN returns all rows from both tables, with NULLs where there’s no match on either side. Example: if you have a customers table and an orders table, an INNER JOIN shows only customers who have placed orders. A LEFT JOIN on customers shows all customers, including those with no orders (useful for finding inactive customers).
You’re given a dataset of 10,000 customer transactions. How would you clean it and prepare it for analysis?

Start by understanding the schema and data types. Then check for: duplicate rows (by transaction ID), missing values (which columns, what percentage, and whether they’re missing at random or systematically), outliers (a $1M transaction in a dataset of $50 averages), inconsistent formats (date formats, currency symbols, text casing), and invalid values (negative amounts where they shouldn’t exist, future dates). For each issue, decide whether to remove, impute, or flag. Document every cleaning decision. Mention that you’d use Python (pandas) or SQL for this, depending on the team’s tools.
Explain the difference between a bar chart, a line chart, and a scatter plot. When would you use each?

Bar charts compare discrete categories (revenue by region, ticket count by priority). Line charts show trends over time (daily active users, monthly revenue). Scatter plots show the relationship between two continuous variables (ad spend vs. conversions, price vs. demand). Common mistakes: using a pie chart when a bar chart would be clearer (anything beyond 4–5 slices is hard to read), using a line chart for non-time-series categorical data, or using a bar chart when the data has a natural time ordering. Always choose the chart that makes the insight immediately obvious.
What does GROUP BY do in SQL, and what’s the difference between WHERE and HAVING?

GROUP BY aggregates rows that share values in specified columns, allowing you to use aggregate functions like SUM, COUNT, and AVG. WHERE filters individual rows before grouping. HAVING filters groups after aggregation. Example: WHERE amount > 100 excludes transactions under $100 before grouping. HAVING COUNT(*) > 5 excludes groups with 5 or fewer transactions after grouping. A common interview trap: trying to use WHERE with an aggregate function, which causes an error — you must use HAVING instead.

Behavioral and situational questions

Behavioral questions for data analyst roles focus on how you approach ambiguous problems, communicate findings, and work with stakeholders who may not be data-literate. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for every answer.

Describe the Situation (what problem needed solving and who asked for it), your Task (gather and analyze the relevant data), the Action (what data you collected, how you analyzed it, and what insight emerged), and the Result (the recommendation you made and the outcome). Even if the example is from school or a personal project, show that you followed a structured analytical process: question → data → analysis → insight → recommendation.
Describe a time you had to present findings to someone who wasn’t technical.
What they’re testing: Communication skills, ability to simplify complex information, stakeholder management.
Focus on how you adapted your communication. Did you replace technical terms with business language? Did you use visualizations to make the data intuitive? Did you lead with the insight and recommendation, then provide the supporting data? The best answers show that you structured the conversation around what the audience needed to decide, not around how cool the analysis was.
Tell me about a time you made a mistake in your analysis. How did you catch it and what did you learn?
What they’re testing: Attention to detail, intellectual honesty, ability to learn from errors.
Pick a real example — interviewers can tell when you’re inventing one. Describe the mistake (maybe you used the wrong date range, missed a filter, or misinterpreted a metric), how you discovered it (self-review, peer feedback, or the results didn’t make sense), and what you changed going forward (added a validation step, started using a checklist, or implemented automated data quality checks). Showing that you caught and corrected your own mistake is more impressive than claiming you never make them.
Give an example of when you had to work with messy or incomplete data.
What they’re testing: Practical data skills, resourcefulness, ability to work with imperfect information.
Describe the data quality issues you encountered (missing values, inconsistent formats, duplicate records, no documentation). Explain your approach: how you assessed the severity of the issues, what cleaning steps you took, what assumptions you made, and how you communicated the data limitations in your final analysis. The key is showing that you didn’t just ignore the mess or refuse to proceed — you worked with what you had while being transparent about the limitations.

How to prepare (a 2-week plan)

Week 1: Build your technical foundation

  • Days 1–2: Review SQL fundamentals: SELECT, WHERE, JOIN (inner, left, full), GROUP BY, HAVING, subqueries, and window functions (ROW_NUMBER, RANK, LAG/LEAD). Practice on SQLZoo, LeetCode (SQL section), or StrataScratch.

Mistakes that sink junior data analyst candidates

  1. Memorizing SQL syntax without understanding what it does. Interviewers will ask you to explain your query logic. If you can’t articulate why you used a LEFT JOIN instead of an INNER JOIN, that’s a problem. Understand the why behind every clause.
  2. Jumping to conclusions without exploring the data. When presented with a metric change, don’t immediately guess the cause. Show a structured investigation: verify the data, segment it, check for external factors, then form a hypothesis.
  3. Not asking clarifying questions. “Find the top customers” is ambiguous. Top by revenue? By order frequency? In what time period? Asking clarifying questions shows analytical maturity and is expected at every level.
  4. Ignoring data visualization best practices. If your take-home has 3D pie charts or charts without axis labels, that’s a negative signal. Keep visualizations clean, labeled, and appropriate for the data type.
  5. Not being able to talk about a personal or academic data project. Even without professional experience, you should have at least one analysis project you can walk through in detail: the question, the data, your approach, and the findings.
  6. Saying you know a tool you don’t. If your resume says Tableau but you can barely create a bar chart, that will come out in the interview. Be honest about your proficiency level — interviewers respect “I’ve used it for basic work and I’m actively learning” more than a bluff.
