Lead with performance and reliability metrics
Every DBA can say they “managed databases.” The ones who get hired lead with the numbers that prove their systems actually worked. “Maintained 99.99% uptime over 34 consecutive months” tells a hiring manager more than any list of certifications. “Reduced 90th percentile latency from 1.2 seconds to 380 milliseconds” immediately communicates the scale and impact of your optimization work. The strongest DBA resumes put availability, latency, and throughput metrics front and center — because those are the numbers that define whether a database team is doing its job.
Show optimization impact with before-and-after query times
Saying you “optimized database queries” tells a hiring manager nothing. Saying you “redesigned the index strategy across 8 high-traffic tables, reducing average query execution time by 74%” tells them you understand the query planner, know how to read execution plans, and can make measurable improvements. Before-and-after numbers are the single most credible way to demonstrate DBA skill. If you’ve reduced query latency, eliminated full table scans, or improved throughput under load, lead with the specific improvement and the technique you used to get there.
Demonstrate backup and recovery readiness
Backup strategies are table stakes. What separates a strong DBA resume is showing that your recovery actually works. “Designed backup system with 12-minute RTO and zero data loss RPO across 8TB of transaction data” tells a hiring manager that you’ve thought through the full disaster recovery lifecycle — not just scheduled nightly backups and hoped for the best. If you’ve tested failover procedures, reduced recovery time objectives, or built automated point-in-time recovery systems, those accomplishments belong prominently on your resume because they demonstrate the kind of operational maturity that companies pay a premium for.
Highlight migration and scaling work
Database migrations are high-stakes, high-visibility projects that showcase cross-functional leadership. “Migrated 6TB Oracle database to Aurora PostgreSQL with zero downtime” doesn’t just show technical skill — it shows you can plan complex projects, coordinate with application teams, manage risk, and deliver under pressure. If you’ve migrated between database engines, scaled from single-node to clustered architectures, or moved on-premise databases to the cloud, lead with the data volume, the complexity, and the outcome. Migrations are the bullets that get DBA resumes to the top of the stack.
