- Production systems thinking. Caching, retries, fallbacks, prompt versioning, feature flags, observability, cost monitoring. Anyone can call an API once. The job is keeping it running for a year at scale without setting your AWS bill on fire.
- Real fine-tuning or training experience (if relevant to the role). If the role wants someone who can fine-tune, name the framework (PyTorch, TRL, Axolotl, Unsloth), the base model (Llama, Mistral, Qwen), the dataset, and the eval. If the role doesn’t want fine-tuning, don’t pad with it.
- Open source / public artifacts. A real GitHub project, a HuggingFace model card, a published evaluation dataset, a paper, a blog post that other engineers cited. The bar is “substantive,” not “exists.”
Notice what’s not on this list: certifications. Stanford Coursera certs. “Prompt engineering bootcamp” badges. None of these move the needle for an experienced AI engineer applicant. If you’re early-career and trying to fill a gap, they can be a soft signal. If you have any production work to point to, list the production work and skip the certificates.
The contrarian thesis: production beats research credentials
This is the part most generic AI engineer resume guides won’t say out loud, and it’s the most important framing for 2026: shipping beats publishing.
From 2018 to 2022, the prestige order in ML hiring was roughly: published at NeurIPS > PhD from a top program > Kaggle grandmaster > production experience. From 2023 onward, that order inverted. - Summary (3–4 lines, optional but useful, named role + years + the most impressive shipped system)
- Experience (the heavy section — production AI work, named stack, eval numbers, scale numbers, outcomes)
- Skills (named stack by category — languages, ML/AI frameworks, infrastructure, data)
- Education (degree, school, year — brief)
- Publications, Open Source, or Selected Projects (only if substantive)

The biggest mistake on most AI engineer resumes is bullets that describe what you played with instead of what you shipped. “Worked with LLMs” is not a bullet, it’s a hobby. A strong AI engineer bullet has four components:
Verb + system + named stack + outcome with numbers.
- Verb — what you actually did. Designed, deployed, fine-tuned, evaluated, scaled, optimized, instrumented, benchmarked, shipped.
- System — the thing you built. RAG pipeline, fine-tuning pipeline, eval suite, agent framework, embedding service, prompt versioning system, semantic cache.
- Named stack — the specific tools. LangChain, LlamaIndex, vLLM, Pinecone, Anthropic Claude, Llama 3, Ragas, MLflow.

Common mistakes on AI engineer resumes
- Generic “passionate about AI” summaries. Every candidate writes this. Replace with a specific 3-line summary that names your years, your most impressive shipped system, and your stack.
- Listing TensorFlow as your top ML framework in 2026. If you primarily use TensorFlow rather than PyTorch in 2026, that’s a yellow flag for many AI engineering hiring managers (it suggests you stopped tracking the field around 2020). List both if you’ve used both, but lead with PyTorch unless TensorFlow is genuinely the right tool for your role.
- Calling a Coursera certificate “experience.” Education is education. Production work is work. Don’t cross the streams.
- Inflating “built an AI agent” from a tutorial. Hiring managers can tell the difference between a real agent system that handled real users and a tutorial completion. Don’t inflate.
- Burying the eval methodology. If you have eval numbers, surface them. If you don’t, the absence is the signal.
- Over-rotating on prompt engineering as a skill. “Expert prompt engineer” is a 2023 phrase that ages a resume in 2026. Prompt engineering is part of the job, not a job title.
- Listing every single model provider as a skill. Pick the ones you actually used in production. “OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Cohere, Llama, Qwen, Gemma, DeepSeek” is filler. “Built production systems on OpenAI GPT-4 and Anthropic Claude; benchmarked against Llama 3 70B for self-hosted alternative” is information.
- An empty GitHub link. Worse than no link. Either point to substantive work or leave it off.
The recruiter test for an AI engineer resume
Print your resume. Hand it to a senior software engineer who isn’t in AI. Give them thirty seconds and then take it back. Ask them three questions: What kind of AI work did this person do? What stack did they use? What’s the most impressive number on the page?
If they can answer all three, your resume is doing its job. If they can’t answer any one of them in thirty seconds, neither can the hiring manager.
